Unsigned TRL....
(8) comments
Yesterday, we posted about unsigned New York act Settings appearing on MTV's TRL and how it might have been too early for them.
Apparently they won't be the only unsigned band to appear on the show. TDC-supported The Friday Night Boys have announced they will also be making an appearance.
According to their MySpace blog, the band will be interviewed and then perform Chasing A Rockstar acoustically. The segment will be airing July 10th.
The segment is part of a weekly feature every Thursday called Under The Radar, which will showcase unsigned acts from across the country.
Do you think The Friday Night Boys are ready for this?
Update: TDC-supported A Rocket To The Moon will also be on the July 10th show.

What Is Indie?....
(4) comments
The Wall Street Journal had an article recently on independent artists making a name for themselves without major label support.
The article focused on Greg Laswell, a singer/songwriter signed to Vanguard Records, who has been featured on Whole Foods Artist Discovery series, as well as Grey's Anatomy and a variety of other TV shows and movies.
He is also managed by Nettwerk, the same group who also manage Barenaked Ladies, Avril Lavigne and Sarah Mclachlan.
Coolfer points out that the term "indie" has been redefined in today's music environment and that independent artists can still succeed without a major label, but they still have to rely on basic components to help development.
From Coolfer: "A decent career is going to be hard to achieve without the other traditional components: manager, lawyer, booking agent, publisher, web designer and maybe indie label. As you can see, an indie artist is independent only of a major label contract, not of agents, consultants, representation or standard expenses that take up their share of the artist's income."
What does the term "indie" mean to you nowadays?

You Decide....
(35) comments
New York's Settings will be appearing live on MTVs TRL today.
Settings is an unsigned band.
If this really is happening, I think that this is way too early for them. National media can not only explode a band but it can also kill a band's career, if it's not done right.
I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this. If anyone has any background info on how this happened, I would like to hear that, as well. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy to see an unsigned band hit MTV. But there are other unsigned bands with a bigger fanbase that this would benefit more.
This band has been building a buzz but I'm afraid this might backfire.

Majors Fall, Indies Rise....
(5) comments
According to DigitalMusicNews , the major labels lost market share for the first half of 2008, while the indie's gained market share.
Out of the four major labels, Warner was the only one to gain in market share, commanding 20.8% of the market. Universal (31.2%), Sony BMG (21.8%) and EMI (9.4%) all lost ground in the first half of 2008.
Indie's gained ground rising a full 1% from last year to 13.9% of the market.
I have a feeling that this trend will continue in the coming years.

Curiousity Killed The TDC Visitor....

Ever since we started to post the SmartPunk Top Unsigned Chart people have continually asked "how many albums do these bands sell to get on the chart?" Since I'm at SmartPunk now, I can give you an idea.
The Top Ten Unsigned bands have sold 641 combined albums in the last 3 weeks. That's an average of 64 albums per band.
The Top Ten Signed bands have sold a combined 1,533 albums on SmartPunk in the last 3 weeks. That's an average of 153 albums per band.
Just to put that in perspective, to get on the Billboard HeatSeeker Chart you need to sell around 450 - 550 albums a week.
SmartPunk does report to SoundScan so you can see that SmartPunk can affect a band's rank on the national album charts. It can also provide a great resource/income for unsigned bands with their releases.
